VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINEMuch like HAWTS, Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) can be made easily with a few simple tools and some components found, repurposed, recycled or scrapped. VAWTs require more force than HAWTs but they are able to catch the wind from any direction. Just like VAWTs, HAWTs should be mounted in the best possible
position to catch the most amount of wind; on top of a building, on a cliff side, atop a tower are all have great potential for gathering a lot of wind energy. How you build your Vertical Axis Wind Turbine will be largely dependent on your tools, materials and environment. You should improvise and experiment with these ingredients and instructions and find solutions which work best in your specific context. If you can build many small VAWTs instead of one large one, it could provide you with better results. If you are unable to build the barrel (Savonius) design like the instructions detail below, perhaps mounting wind-catchers on arms extending from the motor’s shaft will provide you with a working design. |
MAINTENANCE: Provided the VAWT is well balanced and everything is sturdily assembled, a VAWT should require very little maintenance.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: One person could easily construct a VAWT in as little as half a day providing that a structure to mount it on already exists.
