TRAPPINGSmall mammals are abundant and reproduce quickly, often becoming pests to the local environment. By building traps or snares to catch them , you can reduce their effects on the ecosystem while acquiring a lean source of nutrition. The instructions that follow will be primarily focused on rabbits or hares but can also be used for catching other small mammals, fish, and fowl.
To be able to catch an animal, you’ll first have to identify the animal you want to catch. Knowing what it eats will ensure that you bait the trap properly and where it travels to place your snares in the right location. Animals often travel the same route between their nest and source of food, which is also generally the shortest path between the two. You will want to set your trap along the path which the animal follows and add debris on either side of the trap so the animal is forced into the trap. Animals know their environment better than you do, so in order to catch them you are going to have to leave as few indications that you were there, as possible. Also, set as many snares as you can and check them regularly for the best chance of success. |
MAINTENANCE: You should check on your snare/traps daily to ensure that animals caught in them are not suffering unnecessarily and to make sure that no other animals steal what you’ve caught.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: A snare or trap can be built in less than 30 minutes by one person. You should set several to increase your chances of success.
