SOAPThe thought of making soap can be daunting when you haven’t done it before. It is a process with potential for chemical burns but if you take precautions, work in a calm manner, while wearing
eye and skin protection, you shouldn’t have any issues. The saponification process between the lye in the hardwood ashes and fat happens naturally. You can make a really quick soap by just tossing some hardwood ashes in a dirty, oily pan which will give you enough soap to get the pan clean. With the same chemistry you can make bars of soap to get your body clean. |
MAINTENANCE: Soap requires no maintenance but will disappear with use.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: Extracting the lye from the hardwood ashes and crystallizing it will take several days. Combining the fat and lye will take about an hour. The soap will sit in mold(s) for one or two days. After removing the soap from the molds and cutting it into bars, you should cure it for one month for best results.
