SEA FILTER FARMConstructing a sea filter in this way is a bit of an experiment. The concept is to create a farm of small floating islands which will filter out toxins and heavy metals from the surrounding environment.
The farm should work when waves push water through the roots of plants in the center of each floating island. Filter Farms should be used along coastlines, past the point of the water which is commonly used for swimming, water sports and/or fishing. With space for small boats to pass between each filter, the farm does not create a solid barrier but rather a permeable divider which can potentially decrease the toxicity of the human-use areas of shore, and can provide living spaces for aquatic animals. By creating a floating doughnut shaped structure you can create a space for suspending the plants in the water with some sand and then anchoring each cell of the filter to the seabed with a mass of rubble and concrete. |
MAINTENANCE: They should require no maintenance but if there are strong storms, some of the islands could break away from their anchors.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: One person can build and place at least a few filters per day. However, for them to be effective, there needs to be as many as possible creating a grid which runs parallel to the shore.
