HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINEHorizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWT) require less force than Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) but they need to be pointed in the direction of the prevailing winds or they need to rotate to follow
the wind (like a weather vane). Even though they need less force to rotate, they should still be mounted in the highest position possible either by mounting a HAWT on something already existing (building/tower, flag pole, tree, etc.) or by building a structure specifically for mounting a HAWT. Depending on your situation and your materials, it might be more appropriate to build many small HAWTs rather than one large one. If you have to mount your HAWT so that it does not rotate, have it face in the direction where most of the wind is coming. You can build multiple fixed HAWTs and face them towards slightly different directions to maximize your chances of catching the wind. How you construct your HAWT will be very dependent on your tools, materials and environment so you should be open to improvising. |
MAINTENANCE: Provided the blades are well balanced and everything is well assembled, a HAWT should require very little maintenance.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: One person could easily construct a HAWT in as little as a few hours providing that a structure already exists to mount it on top of. Constructing a structure to mount the HAWT on could be done by one person in as few as 4-5 days.
