GABION BASKETSA gabion basket can be in the form of a cage, cylinder or box which has been filled with rubble, stones, concrete, or debris. Gabion baskets are commonly made using various kinds of steel mesh panels, wired together using spiral binders or ring fasteners and usually constructed in the shape of a rectangle. Multiple gabion baskets can be attached together to form obstacles, walls,
architecture, and landscaping elements. Because of the gabion’s weight, strength and conforming nature, they don’t require a foundation. The biggest advantage to gabions is that the fill material needed for the structures can be sourced on site using anything from bottles, old cement, bricks, and rocks. Since water and air are able to pass between the fill material of the gabion baskets, gabion walls will not provide good insulation. |
MAINTENANCE: Gabion baskets require no maintenance, no foundation and do not retain moisture.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: One person should be able to build at least 4 gabion baskets per day, providing that the fill materials are found on site.
