SOLAR SHOWERThe simplest way to have a hot shower is to hang a black garbage bag, filled with water, in the sun. Stand under the bag and poke holes in the bottom of it for a warm shower...or fill a 1.5/2l bottle and leave it in the sun, poke some holes in the top and hold it above your head. Those are easy and quick but the following method is a bit more comfortable.
By salvaging some plumbing fixtures, wood and a large vessel capable of holding water, you’ll be able to construct your own solar water tower. The following instructions show a simple way to construct a solar shower but you can develop the design depending on your resources. The following design requires the user to fill the water vessel manually but it would be advantageous if you could collect rain water directly into the container. If you can build a clear plastic box around the water container, it will heat faster. When it’s not sunny, you could heat up rocks in a fire and drop them into your water container to warm the water or construct a small wood stove which can be lowered into the water container to heat it. |
MAINTENANCE: The water container may need to be replaced occasionally if rust spots appear or parts of the structure if it starts to rot because of constant saturation. The grease rag sealing the connection between the plumbing and the water vessel may also need to be replaced with time.
CONSTRUCTION TIME: One person could easily build a solar shower in a single day, with very limited tools.
